The maths

How we worked it out.

Three months, line by line.

Illustrative example

A month with no sales

Nothing to pay us. With WooCommerce, your hosting is billed whether or not you sell.

Add Your Shop: €0
WooCommerce: €0 in card fees + your hosting plan
Illustrative example

€1,500: 30 orders of €50

The card fees are identical; the difference is our 2.5% commission.

Add Your Shop: 2.5% × €1,500 = €37.50, + Stripe 1.5% × €1,500 + 30 × €0.25 = €30.00 → €67.50
WooCommerce: 1.5% × €1,500 + 30 × €0.25 = €30.00, + hosting and extensions
Illustrative example

€5,000: 100 orders of €50

Our commission stops at €49 for the month.

Add Your Shop: €49 (cap) + Stripe €100.00 → €149.00
WooCommerce: 1.5% × €5,000 + 100 × €0.25 = €100.00, + hosting and extensions

Assumes standard European cards and an average order of €50. WooCommerce figures exclude hosting, extensions, a developer's time and your own.

Questions

WooCommerce or Add Your Shop?

All comparisons
Is WooCommerce really free?

The plugin is: WooCommerce describes it as free, with no monthly subscription. You still need a WordPress site and hosting, which WooCommerce estimates at $25 to $350 a month for most stores, and possibly paid extensions.

My site is on WordPress. Should I choose WooCommerce?

If you or your web designer enjoy running it, it's a natural fit. If not, Add Your Shop joins your WordPress site through a link in your menu, with no plugin to install or update.

Which costs less in fees?

WooCommerce: there's no commission, and WooPayments' card fee is the same as Stripe's. Our commission (2.5%, never more than €49 a month) is what pays for the setup, hosting, updates and support.

Do I need to install anything on WordPress?

No. We add the Shop tab as a link in your menu, or send your web designer a one-line instruction.

Who owns the data?

With WooCommerce, everything sits on your own hosting. With Add Your Shop, your customers and orders are yours: orders arrive in your inbox and payments go to your own Stripe account.
